Bishop Curry Installation Ceremony

Jamey and Sandra at the National CathedralMichael Curry was installed as the 27th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church on November 1st, 2015 at the Washington National Cathedral.  Over 20 Holy Cross members gathered together for a luncheon to watch and celebrate the Installation.  A special thank you to Bonnie and Scott Yeaky for providing pizza!

Curry, 62, succeeds Katharine Jefferts Schori, who was the first woman in the job and is ending her nine-year term. He served about 15 years as leader of the Diocese of North Carolina before he was overwhelmingly elected last summer to the top church post.  Curry is the first African American to serve as Presiding Bishop and brings in a new spirit of evangelism and reconciliation.

In an impassioned sermon Curry told those in the cathedral that, "evangelism is sharing the faith that's in you, and listening and learning from the faith that's in someone else," he said.

"It's about listening and sharing, it's a relationship where God can get in the mix," he said.

He grew up in Buffalo, New York, and earned degrees from Hobart College in Geneva, New York, and Yale Divinity School.

Former Holy Cross Music Director Jamey Graves was invited by Bishop Curry to perform during the ceremony.  The songs for the Installation included Jamey’s arrangement of “Wade in the Water,” an African American spiritual about baptism. It calls us to wade into troubled waters and present ourselves as the image of Christ in the world. Another song, “Montaña,” is a Latin American traditional song that Jamey was sung in Spanish. The lyrics interpret the parable of the mustard seed: “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed you can say to the mountain, ‘move, move,’ and it will move. Thus saith the Lord.”  Jamey also sang the Fraction Hymn.
