Holy Trinity in Fayetteville hosted an all day outreach program for youth across the eastern diocese. The outreach opportunity allowed 6th-12th graders to work in support of a Special Olympics football game. Our youth arrived at the church to participate in worship and listen to a homily that spoke of the importance of service. We then headed over to a local football field where we cheered on the Special Olympics teams and prepared a cookie decorating station for all of the athletes. The rest of the afternoon was spent at the church in small groups discussing our experiences and how we can do more service in our community. One of my favorite comments was from a young person who said, "You can see how brave the athletes are. When I first saw that they had various disabilities I couldn't help but think of how lucky I was not to have one.... like somehow I was perfect. Now I realize they shine brightly in areas that I need to work on. I wish I had their courage." This was a terrific example of the positive impact the program had on all who attended.
I hope that we get to take more of our youth to events like this. The opportunity to serve others and to be an instrument of the Lord is truly an awesome gift.
Thanks to all for your continued support of our youth programming.
