Message from Senior Warden for July

Recently I spent some time perusing a wonderful book about our church put together and maintained by Judith Beckett, Holy Cross’s first Senior Warden.  It’s a history book of the events in the life of our church arranged more or less in chronological order.  It takes one from the time that Holy Cross existed as a vision or figment in the imagination of the folks who would come to be known as our Founding Fathers (and Mothers), progresses through the steps of the early years and brings us into the present via emails, correspondence and formal press announcements.  After enjoying the “innards” of the book if you will, I pulled out several random seeming pieces of paper and discovered the following written by some of those folks very early on:

Basic Premise #1 - Holy Cross exists for those who are not yet members.

Basic Premise #2 – We welcome and accept people wherever they are in their faith journey, and trust God to take them where He wants them to be, and on His timetable.

Basic Premise #3 – People want relationships, not religion.

  1. Authentic Christianity is a relationship, not a religion.
  2. They don’t care what you know until they know that you care.
  3. Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came.

Basic Premise #4 – Positioning:   We play to our strengths. We aren’t interested in trying to be another church.  We learn from others, but we adapt what we like to our situation.  There isn’t one single way that works, or one size that fits all.

Basic Premise #5 – Just because we’ve always done things in a certain way is not, in and of itself, a sufficient reason for continuing to do it that way.  God loves us just the way we are, but He doesn’t expect us to stay that way.

Basic Premise #6 – God pays for what He orders.

Basic Premise #7 – With God, nothing is impossible.

I can only add that I hope these premises that laid the groundwork for Holy Cross in the beginning will continue to be the basis of who we are and who will become.

Yours in Christ,
