God’s Peace Is A Guardrail For The Heart And Mind.

Divine peace is unearned, overwhelming, comforting in chaos.

Rev. Anne Abdy

God’s Peace Is A Guardrail For The Heart And Mind.

Dear People of Faith,

“The peace which passes all understanding

keep your mind on the knowledge and love of God

and of his Son, Jesus Christ.”

                                                            (Philippians 4:7)

Sometimes when I read scriptures that pop out at me, like the one above, it “hits” me between the eyes. It makes me wonder why? Why this scripture on this particular day at this particular time? And sometimes, even when I drill down, an answer never bubbles to the top of my thoughts. What sometimes does help is to break the verse down into phrasing to see if answers come forth.

“The peace which passes all understanding…”

This peace is described as divine tranquility that surpasses human comprehension. This peace is like a “sacred hush” that settles over the soul when the world feels to us like it is in chaos. The understanding of God’s peace overwhelms us. This peace exceeds all that we even think is best for us. It is better that best…this peace outdoes what our limited minds can comprehend and understand. This peace is not earned; it is a gift. God says, “Take the gift, my child, take the gift.”

“…keep your mind on the knowledge and love of God and of his Son, Jesus Christ.”

The verse suggests that accompanying the peace that is felt within, especially in times of anxiety and uncertainty. When we are at a loss for words and the tears have finally dried, we are reminded that we are not alone. You are held. You are known. God provides comfort and security through this peace.

We need to keep our eyes on the prize (if you will). Don’t get distracted. Stay focused. Stay focused God and/or Jesus. Let Jesus be like the sentry standing guard at your soul. Use scripture to help empower you or recall your encounters with the Creator or Son of God. Think of those “Moments closest to God” moments. When you do your relationship deepens and you are built up in faith to know THAT Love. The love that is the Comforter, the Great Protector, and the Prince of Peace.

How do you understand God’s peace? How do you experience God’s peace? … that “The peace which passes all understanding.”

Blessings,

Rev. Anne
