Holy Cross Music Notes with Adelaide

This Sunday’s music is very familiar, and they are all contemporary songs.  We will gather with "They'll Know We Are Christians by Our Love", a popular Christian hymn written in the 1960s by Father Peter Scholtes. His inspiration comes from John 13:35: "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another".  This is one of my favorite songs and it is quite easy to play on the guitar.

Our processional hymn is "I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light"; a contemporary Christian hymn written and composed by Kathleen Thomerson in 1966.  This hymn is deep in scripture.  Ephesians 5:8: "Walk as children of light" and 1 John 1:5: "In him there is no darkness at all". Nearly every line of the hymn refers to a specific passage of scripture.

Our sequence hymn is "Seek Ye First", a well-known Christian song written and composed by Karen Lafferty in 1971, based directly on the biblical verse Matthew 6:33. It is a popular praise and worship song used across many denominations and often included in children's songbooks due to its simple, folk-like melody and profound message.

Our communion hymn is "The Summons" (also known as "Will You Come and Follow Me").  It is a contemporary Scottish Christian hymn written by John L. Bell in 1987 and is known for its prophetic text and its call to radical discipleship.

We will close with "We  Are Called", a contemporary hymn written by David Haas in 1988. It  is widely sung in the Catholic and Episcopalian churches to emphasize themes of  social justice, service, and discipleship. This song rings true of what is in  the hearts of our Holy Cross family.
