An Evening of Joy, Fellowship, and Rock ’n’ Roll

Speak to anyone who has served on the Vittles & Vineyards committee, and you’ll hear the same joyful refrain: we have the most fun together planning this event. Months of preparation go into every detail as the committee gathers to dream up a theme, select wonderful wines, and recruit the many volunteers who make the incredible food and desserts possible.

This year’s celebration transported guests back to the vibrant 1950s, an era of poodle skirts, blue jeans, jukeboxes, and rock ’n’ roll. Everywhere you looked, the spirit of joy and fellowship that defines Holy Cross was alive and shining through the work, creativity, and dedication of the countless hands and hearts that made the evening possible.

I spoke briefly with Jenny Scott on Thursday afternoon as the finishing touches were being placed on the decorations. Smiling as the room came to life, she shared, “There’s nothing that could keep me away from this event.” Her words captured what so many feel about Vittles & Vineyards. It is more than a fundraiser. It is a celebration of community, friendship, and the joy of serving together.

Over the years, this beloved event has supported many meaningful causes and become truly one-of-a-kind in the Wilmington area. Holy Cross is deeply grateful for the overwhelming generosity shown through the silent auction and raffle contributions this year. The offerings exceeded every expectation, featuring beautiful original paintings, handmade works of art, gift certificates, classes, and so much more.

A special thank you also belongs to Roni Hursthouse for warmly inviting guests to participate in the raffle throughout the evening. My wife and I had so much fun imagining all the wonderful things we might win. And while our numbers were never called, it hardly mattered. Knowing the proceeds were supporting such a meaningful cause made every ticket worthwhile, and seeing the excitement and joy on the faces of the winners as they walked up to claim their prizes was more than enough for us. Moments like that perfectly reflected the generous and joyful spirit that filled the room all evening long.

As the photographer for the evening, I wish I could say the photos fully capture what Vittles & Vineyards feels like, but those who have attended know it is an experience far greater than pictures can convey. It is an evening overflowing with laughter, joy, fellowship, and the unmistakable spirit of Holy Cross.

During the event, Pete Lake reflected on how much the camaraderie of the planning committee means to him. “Planning the event is half the fun! Everyone gets along so well and enjoys the process.” And that spirit, joyful, welcoming, and rooted in community, is exactly what made this year’s Vittles & Vineyards such an extraordinary success.
